ABOUT CROSSFIT CARBON

ABOUT CARBON

We are a fitness and wellness facility dedicated to the pursuit of excellence through Community, Effective Coaching and Fitness. But, we are also much more…we are a tight knit group, a community of diverse and remarkable people supporting and encouraging one another to be their best self each day, both in and out of the gym. Carbon’s programs are more than just an effective way to workout and get in shape. The #Carbonlife is a way of living life to be your best. This includes training your body mentally and physically, as well as eating appropriately to sustain an active lifestyle.

IS CARBON FOR ME?

Yes! Carbon is for people of all age. We help improve the lives of everyone from children to grandparents and all in between through fitness and fun! Carbon programs are universally scalable so everyone can participate. We do movements that you do in your everyday life, such as standing up and sitting down, picking things up off the ground, and putting things over your head. What this really means is, in addition to helping you maximize your athletic performance, we will also help you be better prepared to tackle any daily challenges you may face – from unloading groceries to carrying your little-one down a flight of stairs. We just make sure you do it safely, effectively and efficiently. This is what makes Carbon so special. No matter your abilities or experience, our coaches will tailor the workouts just for you. Whether you opt for small group classes or private one-on-one coaching sessions, we are confident you will reach your full athletic potential, and have fun in the process.

WHAT SPECIAL ABOUT THE COMMUNITY?

Lots of things separate Carbon from other programs, but most important is our unique and supportive community. People join for the fitness, but stay for the long haul because of the friendships and bonds they develop within our walls. Aside from building better human beings, Carbon works to develop a community of like-minded individuals who support, encourage, motivate, and assist one another in reaching their personal goals. In fact, the communal aspect of Carbon’s programs is a key component of why we are able to be so effective. It’s not uncommon for an intense training session to be followed by a full on ladies night, bro-session, or both combined! Community is what we are about, we are a strong community working together toward our goals, united in fitness!

What is CrossFit?

CrossFit prepares you for whatever life may throw your way. Our workouts are designed to maximize your results in the gym and improve your quality of life outside of the gym. The CrossFit program delivers a brand of fitness that is broad, general, and inclusive. Our specialty is not specializing. We are generalists. At Carbon, you will learn how to safely, effectively and efficiently squat, lift, press, run, jump, row, throw, and move your body through space. The workouts are challenging yet rewarding. We will help you realize your human potential, and each day that you enter, you will leave better for it.

My first introduction to CrossFit was by a friend who recently joined the Air Force. It was an eye opening experience that immediately changed my outlook on exercise/fitness forever. As it turns out “Fran” was my first WOD (workout of the day), 21-15-9 repetitions of thrusters and pull-ups. Considering myself a pretty “fit” person at the time, I was quickly humbled and realized that there was an entire world of fitness out there that I needed to learn more about.

Looking back on what I was always told and taught was the right way to train I can only say one thing… What was I thinking??? If I had only come across CrossFit 10-15 years earlier… Who knows???

Since 2005 I have been personal training and involved in different areas of the fitness industry. I have seen many people wander around aimlessly looking for something; better health, weight loss, a sense of community just to find the same disappointment. “Routine is the enemy.” CrossFit Carbon is an opportunity for me to share my knowledge, experience and passion for fitness with others.

I began my journey as a coach when I was a student at Northwestern University.  At the time I was working in the Emergency Department at Highland Park Hospital, while studying for a career in medicine and going to CrossFit classes whenever possible.  In the ER, I quickly saw the consequences of a sedentary lifestyle in the local community and decided to seek a career in wellness, where prevention allowed people to truly live, not just simply be alive.

Prior to attending Northwestern, I served eight years in the United States Marine Corps, first as an Anti-armor Assaultman/Demolitions Specialist with 2nd Battalion 4th Marines, based at MCB Camp Pendleton, CA and later as Chief Scout Sniper at 3rd Battalion 3rd Marines, based at MCB Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.  During my time in the military, I served in a number of countries including work in Ramadi and Fallujah during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

After completing my undergraduate studies at Northwestern University in Psychology and Biological Sciences, I went on to earn a Master of Science in Kinesiology with a concentration in Applied Exercise Physiology at the University of Illinois-Chicago.

I started CrossFit in December of 2009 and found that I loved the diversity of the workouts and the community aspect of the life style. In high school and college I was a cross-country runner and after finishing college I started experimenting with marathons and triathlons. I am EXTREMELY excited to be coaching CrossFit and enjoy working with people of all levels and abilities.

Outside of CrossFit Carbon I was a high school math teacher and special education case manager. I have worked in the educational field for over 10 years and I have B.A. in Education, M.S. in Special Education and a M.S. in Administration and Leadership. I enjoying coming to work with my husband everyday! We LOVE what we do and wouldn’t change it for anything!  I LOVE that CrossFit can always surprise you, keep you interested and is different everyday!

I started CrossFit 4 years ago…used to be a runner and was looking for something else. I loved that it helped me become better all around and that it was something different every day.  I enjoy being active with my family, friends, and pup. I also love to travel when I have free time!  I am very passionate about health and fitness so my life revolves around maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

I am a PE, Health, and drivers ed teaching going on my 10th year at Deerfield high school. I brought this fitness concept to my classroom to help improve my students’ overall fitness levels. During the school year, I also coach volleyball and lacrosse.

Athletics and training have been the driving force in my life since I was a child. I have always had a competitive spirit and a love of learning. I was an athlete throughout my academic career reaching all-state in both wrestling and cross country running, I was the New York State junior Golden Gloves Champion in 1984 in my junior year in high school and one of the youngest students to receive my first Dan at the revered Oioshi Judo Club in NYC in 1983.

A military career followed as an Intelligence Sergeant for the Army as a member of the Special Forces where I continued to practice judo and picked up a fair amount of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. On leaving the US Military in 1996 I immersed myself in triathlon and endurance racing competing all over the world as a PowerBar Elite athlete ultimately logging high finishes in the Hawaiian Ironman World Championships as well as other more obscure long-distance challenges internationally. In 2002 I met my wonderful wife Marjorie and had to find another discipline to focus on; 4AM runs before work when you have a warm body in bed next to you. I continued to run, teach and train in the yoga and ballet space until moving to the Midwest in 2009 where I ultimately found CrossFit. I had never lifted a tradition weight before. That, and the infinite variability of the different movements I was introduced to, some which I excelled at and many which humbled me, is why I still train that system today. Also inspirational is CrossFit’s focus on community and nutrition. I have some background in food both preparation and sourcing and believe that diet is the single most important part of and persons overall health and wellbeing. Without a strong nutritional foundation we can’t expect our bodies to do the things we ask it in our environment. I am very proud to be a part of the Carbon community as a member and a coach. Pete is one of the first affiliate owners I met as a fledgling in this space and I was overjoyed when we finally moved close enough to take advantage of this special facility and team. I am here for everyone that commits to this rigorous training system. I know how hard and frustrating it can be, and I am also a beneficiary of its rewards.

I began my personal fitness journey in 2014. At that time I was afraid to pick up anything over 20 pounds because I had a previous back injury. Through my CrossFit coaches I learned how to move properly and as a result, I continue to see improvements and become more and more fit. Each day I get to push myself and test my limits through challenging workouts. The confidence I’ve gained has been unexpected and empowering in ways I never thought possible!

I don’t have to work out… I get to work out.My experience with CrossFit has been so impactful I felt the calling to become a coach and lead others down the path to better health and fitness.  Coaching is a privilege, responsibility, and rewarding experience. There is nothing better than helping someone achieve a goal they previously thought to be impossible!

I believe Carbon is the best place to achieve your goals.  I continue to work toward my personal fitness goals, leading by example.  I take pride in working each day to be the very best coach I can be, inspiring, educating, and hopefully entertaining others on their way to the life they desire and deserve! Together, We Are Carbon!
